Food and mealtimes

Arabic · Key Stage 2 · The School

Everyday food words

خُبْز bread. أَرُزّ rice. لَحْم meat. سَمَك fish. فاكِهة fruit. خُضار vegetables. ماء water. حَليب milk. Learn these in pairs that go together, like bread and water, to make them stick.

Saying what you want or like

أُريدُ خُبْزاً — I want bread. أُحِبُّ الفاكِهة — I like fruit. Swap the food word after either verb to talk about anything on your plate. The verb stays fixed; only the object changes.

One language, many kitchens

Arabic is spoken from Morocco to Iraq, across more than twenty countries. A Moroccan tagine, a Lebanese mezze and an Iraqi masgouf share almost no ingredients or method — the language travels across the region, but each kitchen kept its own local food.

A short mealtime exchange

A: ماذا تُريد؟ — what do you want? B: أُريدُ أَرُزّاً وَسَمَكاً، مِن فَضْلِك — I want rice and fish, please. A: تَفَضَّل! — here you are! Three lines cover asking, answering with two foods joined by "and", and a polite response. Try swapping in two different foods of your own, and practising all three lines aloud with a partner before writing them down.
