Textures and collage

Art & Design · Early Years · The School

What is texture?

Texture is how a thing feels. Some things feel rough. Some things feel smooth. Some things feel soft or bumpy. Touch a few things near you. Can you feel the difference between them? Close your eyes and try it.

Collecting materials

Find some things to use. Cloth. Tissue paper. A button. A leaf. Some foil. Feel each one. They all feel different, even before you glue them down onto your picture. Sort them by how they feel first.

Sticking, not drawing

A collage is a picture made by sticking things down. You do not draw it. Glue a bit of cloth onto paper. Glue a leaf next to it. That is the start of a collage. Keep adding pieces slowly, one at a time.

Choosing for texture

Pick a thing for how it feels, not just its colour. Soft cloth could be a fluffy cloud. Shiny foil could be sparkly water. The way it feels helps tell the story of the picture, not just the colour.

A whole textured picture

Make a small picture with at least three things stuck on. Feel each part when you are done. A good collage has lots to touch, not just to look at from far away. Show it to a friend and let them feel it too.
