Grouping technology by job

A different rule for the same things

You have sorted technology before, into "has a computer inside" and "does not". That rule works well. But it is not the only rule. Try a new one: sort by JOB. What does each thing actually help you DO?

Naming some jobs

Some technology helps you talk to someone far away. Some helps you travel. Some helps with a job at home, like washing or cooking. Some just helps you have fun. Each piece of technology does at least one of these jobs.

The same items, sorted differently

Take the exact same ten things you sorted before. Do not add anything new. Sort them again, using the new JOB rule instead. Watch how differently the groups come out this time, from the very same pile.

A phone. A washing machine. A car. A games console. A doorbell. FIRST SORT, by "has a computer inside": all five have one, so this rule barely separates them at all. SECOND SORT, by JOB: the phone helps you talk to people far away. The washing machine helps with a job at home. The car helps you travel. The games console helps you have fun. The doorbell tells you someone is here. Same five items. One rule barely sorted them. The other rule gave five completely different groups.
