Making something that fits your head
Design & Technology · Early Years · The School
Heads are different sizes
Not every head is the same size. Wrap a strip of paper round your own head. Mark where it meets. Now do the same for a friend. Compare the two marks. They are very unlikely to sit in the same place.
Measuring before cutting
Wrap the paper strip round the head loosely first. Mark where it overlaps. Only THEN cut it to length. Leave a little extra for a fastening. Cutting to a guessed length first almost always goes wrong.
Making it adjustable
A crown that can grow or shrink a little suits more people. Use a paper clip. Or a bit of tape you can move. Or an overlap you can adjust. Do not glue it at one fixed size. That way, the same crown can still fit a head that is a little bigger, or a little smaller.
Make a paper crown to fit your own head exactly. Glue it shut at that one size. Try it on a friend with a smaller head. It slips down over their eyes. Try it on an adult. It will not close at all. Now make a second crown. Give this one an overlap you can adjust, not a fixed glued join. Try that one on all three heads. Each time, move the overlap. It fits snugly every time. One crown, three heads, because it was built to adjust, not to one fixed size.
