Land and water

Blue and green

Spin a globe and look at it. The blue parts are water. The green and brown parts are land. Now put your finger down at random. Do it ten times. Count how often you land on blue. It will be most of the time. That is because most of the Earth is water.

Sea, river, lake

The SEA is huge and it is salty. A RIVER is moving water. It flows down to the sea. A LAKE is water with land all around it. Have you been to any of them? Say which one. Then say what it was like.

Living by water

People build towns beside rivers. They build them by the coast too. Water gives you something to drink. It gives you food. And it gives you a way to travel. Look at a map of Britain. See how many towns sit on a river. It is almost all of them. That is not an accident.

Close your eyes. Spin a globe. Put one finger on it. Now open your eyes. Is your finger on land or on water? Do it ten times and keep a tally. Most people land on blue six or seven times out of ten. That is because about seven tenths of the Earth is water. Your tally is a real measurement of the planet. And you made it with a finger.
