Salah — talking to Allah

Talking to Allah
Salah is when a Muslim talks to Allah. We call it praying. Muslims stop what they are doing. They face one special way. Then they pray. This happens more than once a day, every single day.
Standing, bowing, and down low
In salah, you stand up straight first. Then you bow. You bend in the middle. Then you go down low. Your head goes near the floor. Each part is a way to talk to Allah with your whole body, not just words.
Children pray too
Salah is not just for grown-ups. Kids learn to pray too. They often stand right by mum or dad. You do not have to get it right straight away. We all start by learning, bit by bit.
A special time, again and again
Muslims stop to pray many times in one day. It happens in the morning. It happens later too. It happens again at night. Life goes on around it, but salah comes back again and again, all day long, every day.
Layla tries to stand still
Here is a made-up story about Layla. Layla is four. Before salah, she plays a game with her mum. The game is to stand still and count to ten. First, Layla wobbles. She giggles. She only gets to six. Her mum says to try again, slowly. The next time, Layla stands tall. She counts to ten. She does not wobble at all. She grins. She did it! Then the game is over, and salah begins. The game is not salah. But salah starts with standing, so Layla is practising standing. She still wobbles some days. But she tries again. With practice, it gets easier.
