Ways my body moves

Travelling

WALK, RUN, JUMP, HOP, SKIP, CRAWL, ROLL, SLIDE. Say each word out loud. Then do it. Some are easy. Some take a lot of practice. Hopping on one leg is really hard when you are three or four. Getting better at it is the whole point.

Copying

Watch someone make a shape. Arms out wide. Up on tiptoes. Curled up small. Now copy the shape. Then make a shape of your own for them to copy. Copying is how we learn to move. We learn this way long before anyone tells us the words for it.

Stopping

The most important skill is STOPPING. When you hear the word freeze, stop still. Be quiet too. Practise it while you are running. A child who can stop when asked is allowed to run. A child who cannot stop has to be held back. So this one skill unlocks all the others.

Cross the hall six times. Go a different way each time. Run. Hop. Skip. Crawl. Slide sideways. Then creep along as slowly and quietly as you can. Now do the slow one again. Try to go even slower. See if you can do it without a wobble. Most children find the slow one hardest of all. Control is harder than speed. That is the point of the lesson.
